The Department of Botany, established in 1919, is the second-oldest postgraduate department and a leading center for teaching and research in plant sciences in India. Widely recognized for its significant contributions, the department has received several prestigious designations, including DSA (UGC) in 1972, CAS in 1980, COSIST in 1984, DST-FIST Phase I in 2002, DST-FIST phase II in 2015, and the VI Phase of CAS in 2023. The department's primary research thrust areas include Phycology, Ecology, Mycology and Plant Pathology. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Botany, and specialized courses in Environmental Science and Applied Microbiology at the PG level. With a legacy of excellence, the department continues to advance scientific research and education in plant sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability.
